On August 22nd, 2022 Joel Derrall Roundy returned to be with our Savior, Jesus Christ. He was born on April 21st, 1960 in Phoenix, AZ to Derrall and Nanna Roundy. He was the 3rd child in a family of four. Joel spent the first twelve years of his life in Phoenix. Then in 1972 his family relocated to Farmington, NM. The first Sunday he went to church he met his future wife, Danette. Joel spent his teens playing football, tennis, racquetball, developing his love of hot rods, and listening to rock and roll. Some of his greatest achievements were earning his Eagle Scout and being inducted into the Order of the Arrow.
Joel graduated from Farmington High School in 1978. In 1979 he served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Fresno, California. He would later remind everyone he met that it was the”Greatest mission ever.” Joel returned in 1981 and started working for Arizona Public Service. He started as a janitor and began working his way through the ranks. In 1986 Joel reconnected with Danette at a family function and started dating immediately. They quickly realized that it was love and they eloped to the Justice of the Peace on April 18th, 1986 in Flagstaff, AZ. A year later they were sealed for Time and all Eternity in the Mesa, AZ temple. Joel spent 34 years working in Power Plants at APS, Pacificorp, and eventually retiring from PNM.
When Joel was 19 years old he was diagnosed with Polycystic Kidney Disease, something he would face head on for the rest of his life. In 1991, 4 days before his 31st birthday, Joel had his first Kidney Transplant. It lasted him 24 years. He then survived 6 years of dialysis before he received his second transplant on April 6th, 2021.
Joel was very active in all his church callings including serving 2 ward missions and 3 stake missions along with numerous other callings. Before he passed away he was a teacher in the Elders Quorum. It was by far his most favorite calling and talked about it often.
Joel is survived by his amazing wife, Danette, and children, Jordan (Payne) White, Dillon (Emily) Roundy, and Betsey Roundy. Some of his final words were, “I was so proud of how all my kids turned out and they never let me down.” Joel also is survived by his three sisters Rhonda (David) Pierce, Roxanne (Tony) Henry, Jana (Michael) Mistretta, and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.
Joel is preceded in death by his mother and father, Derrall and Nanna Roudy. His paternal grandparents, Jesse C Roundy and Nancy Lillian Eager. His maternal grandparents Murray T Belshe and Fay Hamblin along with many other relatives.
The Roundy family would like to thank all the medical professionals who worked with Joel throughout the years, the staff of My Kidney Care, especially Dr. Manish Pandya.
There will be a graveside service held for Joel on August 26th, 2022 at Greenlawn Cemetery at 1pm. The family requests that, if you have a Hawaiian shirt, to wear in honor of Joel. We hope to hear all the many wonderful stories you have to share.
